There are many,
too many, police shootings each year around the country. Some justified, some not. Even when it's ruled justified
by state and local authorities, there are always questions. Was there anything else that could have been done?
Was it necessary for my loved oned to be shot to death? In many cases, it was not necessary. There are other alternatives
the police officer failed to use or was not trained to use. Let the punishment fit the crime. Our loved ones have
paid the ultimate price for their crimes. They should have had the chance to learn from their mistakes. Since
September 11, 2001, we feel authorities have seemingly imposed an atmosphere of repression and law enforcement on both the
local and national level carry broad new powers. We cannot and must not allow authorities to get away with what happened
on 9/11/01 to let cops who kill people go unpunished. Those of us who have lost the ones we love at the hands of law
enforcement come forward to ask that changes be made in the screening, training and use of deadly force by law enforcement
authorities.
1. Detailed psychological and background screening of officers
2. Extensive training for each officer in the use of and
restraint of weapons, and also split second decision making on when to use or not to use deadly force; Extensive training
in communications with individuals who have mental and physical disabilities; also training for officers in protecting themselves
by giving them new insights on how not to place themselves in a life threatening situation.
3. Enforcing mandatory drug screening for new officers and
implementing random drug screening throughout the officers careeer; Also immediate drug screening when an officer has
been involved in a shooting.
4. Implement and enforce new policies and procedures to penalize
an officer when using unnecessary excessive or deadly force.
5. The implementation and training for police officers
to use more non-lethal measures of apprehending an individual.
6. Using today's technology to get background information
on the individual before the situation at hand escalates into a life or death situation. NO pursuits in
cases involving misdemeanors.
If you agree with the uprising of deadly force against civilians by law enforcement on a local
and national level is to the point where we as U.S. citizens need to voice our opinion and make a difference, please contact
or write: Your local representative or congressman and say YES to these changes.
